Week 4 - Directive's manifesto

What is Directive's manifesto:
provides a working list that can help provide clarity on what Information Visualization through 9 directives, why information visualization differs from information art or infographics.

1. Form follows function
2. Interactivity is key
3. Cite your source
4. Power of narratives
5. Do not glorify aesthetics
6. Look for relevancy
7. Embrace time
8. Aspire for knowledge
9. Avoid gratuitous visualizations

How to have a constructive workflow

Tip 1: Understand the question
Tip 2: Construct a strategic plan
Tip 3: Fill in the blank
Tip 4: Get some ideas as inspiration
Tip 5: Set a parameter

Project 1 - Animated Infographic

For this project we were instructed to redesign an infographic and then animate it. Free to pick the software of our choice I chose Live2D because I was not willing to take the chance and present a half- baked product with adobe after effects.

A4 = Print size
16:9 = Screen size

Searching for the infographic
I was searching Pinterest for infographics but they were all so good. So me and my friend who was in the same room at the time decided to search up bad infographics on purpose. I was about to do one on pizza but then I found one that caught my eye. It made me so mad that I just had to redesign it.

Figure 0.0: Chosen infographic

Just look at it. IT LOOKS LIKE A BIOLOGY TEXT BOOK FOR CULINARY KIDS! Anyways in spite of the reasons stated previously I have decided to take the initiative to redesign this infographic and give it the make-over it needs.

First sketches

I had 3 different sketches. the first one was in the form of an oval. A Ferris wheel of sorts. The second one was in the form of a carrot. And the last one was a map of like a classic board game.

Figure 0.1: First rough sketches

In the end no.3 was selected with assistance from lecturer.

Development
I began development in adobe illustrator. This was due to my stylus being out of commission due to a faulty sensor.

Figure 0.2: information units

I cut out the pictures within the infographic. and then pasted the them into semi-circle holes that I made using path-finder into the shapes. I then added the names of the cuts and their information.

Figure 0.3: Poster during stage 1

Figure 0.4: Poster during stage 2

This was when I added the vegetables and salt shaker. I forgot previously to mention that the titles were typed in the same font in different layers. I had 6 layers each.

Figure 0.5: Poster during stage 3

I felt like something was lacking. So I added some stripes in the background to give it a more kitchen aesthetic considering the theme of the original.

End of Project 1

Project 2 - Animation

For the animation I used Live2D. It is a digital puppetry software that is compatible with face tracking.

Figure 0.6: Poster in Live2D

On the software I meshed the ribbon and made parameters for all the elements except the background.

Figure 0.7: Knife through titles

I made a parameter where the knife goes through the letters the letters would the fall over like actual vegetables.

Figure 0.8: Knife about to cut through title

The knife also goes up so that it makes it more realistic

Figure 0.9:
I used the brush tool to push back the mesh

Figure 1.0: Animating the poster

I had to change the size into 1080x1920 and moved each component on the timeline.

End of Project 2
