Exercises - Fundamentals

For our first assignments we were taught the fundamentals during lecture. They included the following;
- Perspective drawings
- Composition
- Value Painting
- Ambiance
- Color management
- Vignette set design
- Photobashing

These were pretty much the basics and were necessary in order for us to understand how to do our projects.

To be fair it was my first time learning to photo bash. I did not have a very clear vision and had a very hard time understanding it until I asked my lecturer just what techniques could be utilized.

Project 1 - Landscape and exterior

While everyone else had already known what they wanted to do during the first week, I was struggling to find any semblance of inspiration and a topic that would keep me hooked for months on end due to burn out this early in the semester. I may have had bitten off more than I could chew this semester considering the amount of classes I had and the amount of things needed to be done each week.

My lecturer then asked me to name a movie off the top of my head, I just said harry potter. He than proceeded to tell me to mix that with sci-fi, What I ended up finding was a new source of inspiration, a concept and something I'd be hooked on for the next up coming months.

My original concept was supposed to be a residential building for witches and wizards however, it was scrapped due to multiple circumstances and I was struggling with it for a while. While scrolling through the internet I suddenly remembered an old video game series that I used to love called professor Layton. It had a very stylized and cartoony art style which I loved. A new game in the franchise was set to be released in the year 2025 and so I took that concept and ran with it.

I started sketching the building and it all sort of clicked.

After this I did a bit more exploration on what kind of towers I could do and I actually had fun with the designs and got my motivation back.

Figure 1.2: Rough draft_idea exploration.

These designs were rather non-sensical but I had fun nonetheless.

I then made and finished up my call out sheet for this task.

Figure 1.4: Call out sheet

Though there were suggestions in order to make this better I felt that this version was the best version. That it was practical and worked well with the surrounding and adding ridges was sort of a hassle. But one change I did make was the chimney. I went for a more flat, somewhat more practical version than a 1930's work whistle shape that way the smoke escapes way better.

Project 2 - Interior and Set design

I took my inspiration from my vignette set design and doubled down on the alchemist lab. My original plan was to do 3 floors and 3 different rooms overall. I made a narrative about an alchemist and a music shop owner having to share the building after having bought it from the previous owner and them quarreling over the slightest of things until they learn to co-exist with each other.

However I wasn't going to be able to do all of it in the span of this semester with the same quality in mind so I doubled down on the most developed concept which was the alchemist's lab.

Art direction

Once I had a stable idea I started to put everything into perspective and cleaned up the original rough.

I then tested out a 5 different Values and ambiance based on the line art to see which works best. I made a gray layer and proceeded to add different shades of gray to each one. The one on the second row to the right was the control sample as it had no alteration to its shading.

At this point I was pretty unsatisfied with the staircase and so I tried a different approach and tried a spiral staircase. Now I will be honest, it looked like crap.

Figure 2.8: Update 1_with staircase

I had to revamp this with a better version of the staircase, in the end the whole staircase was scrapped because it kept blocking the view and and it was honestly a hassle to draw.

Figure 2.9: Update 2_after changes

The staircase ended up looking way better but obstructed the view and though I had spent a considerable amount of time on the staircase, it sadly had to go along with the movable chalkboard for the same reason as it obstructed the pentagram on the floor.

There were a lot of changes that I made to the original that as you can see is the patterns of the floorboards and how the wall looks. It was looking very plain so I needed to give it some personality; such as thickness, wall panels and window frames as per suggestion. I also had a couple of cracks and burn marks as a way to tell the story of a clumsy alchemist who kept messing up his experiments, said experiments blowing up his face and all while trying to summon a demon.

I also added a roof.
Figure 3.0: After adding personality to the wall

Once that was done I added more changes such as more cracks, burn marks, equations and color.

Figure 3.1: colored

Breaking away from the building we also had to build the assets for the environment, what's a room without some furniture right? I initially did them facing the front since I'd be comparing them to human scale. But turns out the 3/4 view was required.

so I did just that.

Figure 3.1: assets_ attempt 1_ front view

Figure 3.4: assets _ Work in progress_ 3/4 view

I had a hard time with completing these due to time restraints and the fact that I had 2 deadlines for 2 other subjects that were so close within one another didn't help.

figure 3.5: assets_ 3/4 view_ completed

Now back to the environment I made a few changes by suggestion of a friend, she asked me how clumsy is this character, and I replied with really clumsy. She then suggested that I add some spilt potions and stacks of research on the floor to really sell it.

Final project

Last but not least was the design bible and the individual call out sheet. I may have had a mishap by skimming over the assignment tab and not realizing that the canvas size was supposed to be  3500 x 2000 pixels with a 200dpi. So I made it in an A3 with 350dpi. I had to go back and resize everything  but at least I had everything ready to go.  I made the design bible using canva and placed everything within it.

Here are the final renders of everything and the design bible itself;

Reflection

Experience

Best module in the whole semester honestly I had the freedom to play around with concepts and improve on them even though I was struggling with burn out in the beginning. Hypothetically I would take this class again but I would reduce the amount of modules in the semester that I'm taking.

Findings

It's a lot of work and I'm glad I got to see the results I loved how the final renders turned out and how I chose to portray the lighting.

Observation

Not everyone is perfect and I'm not at the level of some of my classmates or my seniors. I realized in order to get everything done on time in this module you'd have to dedicate a lot. Basically lock yourself in your room and just work, for me I think its somewhat impossible because I do have a breaking point and a social life, and hunger exists unfortunately so I can't just skip all 3 meals in a row especially with my medical history of anemia. Rest is definitely needed maybe next semester I will either try decreasing the amount of subjects I take or do a bunch of work that covers like...3 weeks worth in advanced and then I'll have nothing for some weeks in between as a way to let myself not fall into burn out.
