Task 1 - Proposal
Our first task assigned was to find a topic to research and create a
proposal. Each topic we researched needed to be related to the
specialization of our choosing, and for me that was entertainment design. I
decided to do research based on the character designs of vtubers (a.k.a.
Virtual Youtubers). This topic is something I decided upon based on
experience, since I am a vtuber myself. It always peaks my interest when someone brings up vtuber character
designs.
I spent a few weeks trying to get a decent problem statement trying to find
what to research about, I consulted with my lecturer who gave me tips and
eventually I had landed on a proposal that would entail the oversaturation
of vtuber designs in the corporate scene.

Task 2 - Critical review
For this next task we were supposed to find an article and perform a
critical review of it, this required, Focus and research questions,
literature reviews, methodology and approach, analysis and findings,
strength and weakness of article, and conclusion.
I decided to my critical review of this article
VTUBER (virtual YOUTUBER) market size, share, growth, and industry
analysis, by type (2D VTUBER, 3D VTUBER), by application (Livestreaming
& Performance, Digital Contents & Derivative, others) and
regional insights and forecast to 2031
(2024) VTUBER (VIRTUAL YOUTUBER) Market Size, Forecast, 2031. Available at:
https://www.businessresearchinsights.com/market-reports/vtuber-virtual-youtuber-market-109503
(Accessed: 03 June 2024).
Which covers the market size, share, growth and analysis of
the modern day vtuber industry. Where it covers in detail the oversaturation
of
the market, its potential, strengths and weaknesses.

Task 3 - Primary Data and analysis
This task was where we really did our research I got the honor of
interviewing 4 fellow vtubers Mr. zombie266, Estody, Leronlex and Mew Xuan. The research method that I proposed is to compare and contrast different
designs from different agencies. In the slides I have prepared for the
interview I prepared 3 different models from 3 different agencies and
branches.
those vtubers being;
Hololive;
Kureiji Ollie (Hololive ID)
Hakos Baelz (Hololive
EN)
Hoshimachi Suisei (Hololive JP)
Holostars;
Hanasaki
Miyabi (stars JP)
Yukoku Roberu (stars JP)
Gavis Bettel (stars EN)
Nijisanji;
Tsukino
Mito (JP)
Vox Akuma (EN)
Min Suha (ex-KR)
Vshojo;
Iron
mouse
Kuro Kurenai/ K9 Kuro
Matara Kan
The following interview consisted of 7 questions plus 1 bonus question
shown below;
1.What are the drastic differences you recognize in these designs?
2.What
are the features of the designs that are most appealing?
3.Are there any
similarities that you notice in between all these character designs?
4.Do
you think they would stand out in between other vtubers if options are
present?
5.What is the most recognizable element of their design?
6.How would you simplify (insert) character design into 3 simple words?
7.Is clarity/silhouette an important aspect to help a Vtuber model stand
out?
bonus:
If you were running a vtuber agency yourself would you hire these
artists for your talent’s models?

Unfortunately two of the interviews were unable to be transcript due to
unforseen circumstances in regards to faulty equipment as a result I was
only able to get 2 of the interviews transcripted.
In conclusion;
the elements present in a good corporate vtuber model are
Clear silhouettes,
Bright and attractive colour palettes,
interesting shapes and
strong visual language and an
interesting concept. The 3/4 interviewees all chose characters with
bright colour palettes and interesting hair shapes because the head is the
first thing they see.
It is also to be noted that these elements can also come into play with
the vtuber's content. Thus enhancing the experience for the viewer
overall.

Task 4 - Presentation and compilation
Last but not least our fourth and final task was to create a
presentation and a video to go with it. It was probably one of the
hardest as deadlines for every module I had were so close to each
other. When I made the slide initially I had about 34 slides in total
but then I realized when recording myself that I couldn't fit all of it into an
8-10 minute video and I had to cut it down to the recommended 20-25
slides and a 26th slide just for the video.

Reflection
Experience
I would never want to do this again. This was just pain. Pain 'til the end. It wasn't painful at first but it slowly became more painful. It left me to question myself and my existence. I honestly just loathe the subject over all I stayed up countless nights for this subject and I honestly wished I didn't.
Observation
Research is one thing especially when it comes to a subject that you specialize in. I enjoyed the beginning of the module as I was getting constant feedback and improving upon my writing. I wish I had better time management but on the other hand I have 5 subject this semester and I wished I had taken 4. It feels like there is not enough time and I'm always on a rushed job.
Findings
I found the amount of research that goes into trying to find the perfect audience to be astounding. It's just so overwhelming that I can't help but appreciate the amount of work that goes into projects and design that are carefully thought out and planned.
