Story break down

The black cat by Edgar Alan Poe

Once upon a time...
There was a man who was very fond of animals. He was married to a loving wife and had many pets. His favourite was a cat named Pluto whom accompanied him for many years

One day...
The man fell ill and began going insane. He started abusing his wife and the animals. Pluto bit him one night. Because of that he took the cat by the throat and gouged out an eye with a pen knife, the man continued to hang the cat from a limp tree. The night of the murder the man’s house caught fire and burned down. He spiralled further into insanity when he met a similar looking cat to Pluto he described as a monster, until one day he got drunk and killed his cat (Pluto) and his wife. He then proceeded to brick up his wife in an old cellar.

Until finally...
The police came to his house due to people saying they heard screaming, The man tried swaying them but gave in to the anxiety that they were toying with him and revealed the corpse of his wife along with the cat (monster) on his wife’s head that he had walled up in the tomb.

In the end the cat had revealed his hiding spot when he thought he got away with murder. The man was then arrested by the police.

Borders and character design

I wanted to go for a theater theme with a Tim Burton-esque twist. Using shapes I designed them as if they were Vector characters.

The Tryptich

Animated Visual Novel

Following the story of the tryptich we needed to create a 1 page animated visual novel.

Thumbnails

I then chose this one because it would be the easiest to animate.

I chose this layout because I wanted to explore
more of the story. Not just one particular scene. There were changes made later on but I kept the
Tim Burton vibe that I wanted to go with despite
the brighter colours.

I wanted to also remind the viewer of the story and so I planned the colours of white, blue and red.
I took the eye gouging scene and made it into the perspective of the cat.
And I kept the blue sky and fence because I wanted to remind the viewer of the events that are transpiring.
Lastly I wanted to do the brick scene, along with a quote from the story.
I wanted to also remind the viewer of the story and so I planned the colours of white, blue and red.

The page

There were plenty of changes made from the-
thumbnail mainly the position of the cat and-
2nd panel. Other notable changes were-
background colour and the addition of the golden-
rim.

I seemingly arranged it like this with animating in
mind, as I did not want to obstruct any important
details.
