Week 1 - 5; Pen tool, Vormator, Colour, Illustrated type, 3D

Excersize 1| Pen tool

Pen tool is the most essential tool in illustrator as it provides many uses. A tool that allows you to create shapes using freeform curves.

Shortcut: P

to use the tool, choose the locations of  the nodes with the shape you're trying to create. You can then choose to make curves using the handle. To end connect and close the shape. You can use the pen tool to create shapes by filling with colour or use it to select by switching over to the select tool soon after. You can practice the use of the pen tool by playing the Bezier game.

Excersize 2 | Vormator

The vormator shapes are 8 vector shapes used to challenge artists with a limited palatte; these shapes include the zerk, drop, badge, chevron, bar, wurst cobra and tentacle.

Figure 1.0:  Vormator shapes

This week we needed to create a character using these shapes.
I opted to make a little demonic panda using the badge, zerk, drop, tentacle and bar.

Excersize 3 | Colour

Colour selection; to select a colour you can double click on the object or go to the drop down menu on the top left of the screen. You can bring the colour sliders by pressing shift + click on the drop down menu.
You can then hold shift and click to lighten or darken your selected colour to add highlighting or shading.

You can also go into options and select complemantary option which will give you a complementary colour to the one you have.

Eye dropper tool; Shortcut: I
by using the eye dropper tool you can sample colours from anywhere. Just select the item/ typography and use the eyedropper tool to change the colour of said item.

Excersize 4 | Illustrated Type

In this excersize, we used word generator to get two words and we needed to visualize them into an illustrated typography.

The words I got were Iron and Castle

Figure 1.2: type layout

First I needed to figure out the layout of the letters. I wanted to emphasize the castle aspect of the type.

Excersize 5 | 3D

We messed around with 3D for this excersize.
By going to effects > 3D and materials, you will find a menu that'll let you mess around with 3D, there you can experiment with the lighting, thickness, plane and so much more.
