Biography about one's self
Introduction
My name is Jessica and I am weird. There is no doubt about it ask anyone
who’s seen me high on crack at 3 am in the morning.
They’ll tell
you all about it. A 19 year old obsessed with anime, punk and indie music, I
am a BDCM student who is borderline always on the verge of insanity. I am
constantly sleep deprived but that usually fuels my imagination half the
time since I’m always kind of lucid dreaming in reality.
Paragraph 1: what is your passion?
My passion has always been in art. Ever since I was a young child I
would always draw to pass the time and eventually I decided I wanted to do
it full time. It was better than sitting in a lab all day. I also like to
come up with weird songs. At first they were intentional but when I entered
my collage years, the more sleep deprived I get the more weird my lyrics
are. Since when could skeletons fly? Guillotines and scapulas, decapitated
nebulas? Who comes up with these kind of things???
Paragraph 2: What is your Main motivator?
My main motivator for my dream is practically graduation. My biggest goal
as of the moment is to graduate university. I just want to graduate.
Summary: how do you plan to visualize your dream in your artwork?
Depends which lucid dream are you talking about. I have my ways.
Statements about your work
Tell us about your work
For this assignment I was inspired by the work of Neutral milk
hotel, specifically their album in the aeroplane over the sea.
Neutral milk hotel is one of my favourite indie rock bands of all
time and I find some form of comfort in their chaotic music.
What's the concept behind it?
My idea would be to have my head on my hand while the one on my
neck is replaced with a gramophone. With a lighthouse in the distance
and make it rain forks. (A reference to the song king of carrot
flowers part 1.) While a giant sea serpent swam through the green
ocean, and a red aeroplane carrying a banner that reads and I quote, “
And one day we will die and our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over
the sea.” (which is a song lyric from in the aeroplane over the
sea).
What is the message that you want people to understand?
I’d make myself into an eldritch god with black ink running down my
face looking out at the ocean. A grim twist on a legendary album
cover in my opinion. All with the theme of comforting chaos in mind.
I’m contemplating adding ghosts but I think I already have too much
if I say so myself.
Summary
In conclusion I couldn’t become an eldritch god. I’ll become a headless
astronaut instead.
Moodboard
These were my main inspirations for my work. they mainly consisted
of album cover artworks on Neutral Milk hotel albums.

Sketches
When coming up with the designs, I had a lot of rough sketches and
Ideas. But one thing remained consistant which was the fact that my head
was not going to be on my head. At first I wasn't sure how this lucid
dream of mine was going to be realized. I tried taking the marrionette
apporoach exagerating the jaw in order to fit the size of the project,
but what I really fancied was something akin to a Dullahan.

I wanted ink comming out of my black eyes and mouth but It wasn't kid
friendly. So with careful consideration of lecturer's advice I decided
to put my head in an astronaut helmet.

Final Poster

This is how it looks in the end. I added more contrast to the
background and put the spotlight on myself.
The newspaper sky is less bright but it provides a good contradiction
with the fore ground. I wanted to make it lighter as we get closer to
the foreground. Overall I'm pretty happy with it.
ARTIST STATEMENT:
I was gonna make myself into an eldritch god. But I was told that it’d
be too scary for the kids. So on my lecturer’s suggestions I decided to
become a headless astronaut.
Animation Process
I first loaded the compilation into after effects and did the animation
there. I Then planned how the collage was suppose to move and interact
with.
Figure 1.4: after effects animation process
Soon after I made points to make the selected objects. Each of them move
at a different speed, so I needed to time everything so it works
together to create this chaotic harmony.
Figure: 1.5: after effects positioning points
Continuing on I then used the Puppet warp tool to move my body.
Music
Once I was done with the animation, I added the track that I wanted to
use. My whole collage was inspired by one of my favourite bands of all
time Neutral Milk hotel. So it was fitting that I just had to use
Neutral Milk Hotel's In the aeroplane over the sea.
After rendering on after effects I brought the project into adobe Premiere Pro and edited the sound with some guidance from my lecturer.
Figure 1.6: Premiere Pro sound editing
At first I wanted to use the first part of the song, but with careful
consideration and advice from my lecturer. I decided to use the
interlude which has a bunch of squeaky hinges as it gives feelings of
chaos and makes the whole thing more fun.
Figure 1.7: Manually creating transitions the song
Now the challenge with this was the very fact that the song had a weird tone and trying to find a lee-way where they mesh is not easy. In the beggining it sounded very choppy, didn't sound smooth at all. after some more tweaking it started becoming more smooth and once it did I manually faded the sound out.
